If the excessive 17th century styling of most refined Parisian hotels is too much for your modern sensibilities, try the Montalembert.

It has been overhauled with a unique feel for both contemporary design, Art Deco fashion, and French tradition (not to mention modern amenities like flat-screen TVs with DVD players and iPod docks).

From the classy, minimalist lobby and bar, you can ascend to your choice of bedroom: either "traditionelle" Louis-Phillipe style with heavily lacquered chestnut and gold Art Deco furnishings, or the "moderne" style where dark sycamore and hand-crafted leather are molded along clean, simple, elegant lines.

All baths are sheathed in dark marble panels, with tall swivel mirrors and hammered steel sinks. Only one suite (the priciest) was left in the traditional style, but all come with larger baths than the standard rooms.

However, for optimum romance skip the suites and book junior suite no. 81. It may only consist of one, large room (with a huge bath), but its small terrace has the best Eiffel Tower view of any hotel in town.

The three mansard doubles also have dreamy views of Parisian rooftops but, alas, no Eiffel.
